EAS5270 War and Women in Modern East Asia 3 6 Major Master/Doctor Korean Yes
This class aims to reflect on modern wars, states and women's relationships by examining how each country mobilized women's sexuality in wars in East Asia in the 20th century. It will mainly compare and analyze military prostitution establishments in each country. Military prostitution establishments means military-only brothels established by the state. The most well-known is the Japanese military 'comfort center'. However, although it is not well known, military prostitution establishments similar to that have been established in East Asia even after Japan was defeated. These include RAA by Japan immediately after their defeat, the Korean Military Special Comfort Women Corps operated during the Korean War, and the Special Assignation Teahouse stablished by the Taiwanese Kuomintang government during the cold war area. In some cases, the government designated and managed private prostitution establishments exclusively for the military. These are the military camp town around the U.S. military base in Asia. Unexpectedly, military prostitution establishments have existed quite commonly. In that sense, this class first summarizes the background and history of the emergence of military prostitution establishments in these East Asian regions, and second, it tries to compare and analyze each social and historical context. Third, it tries to understand the resolution movement for that, and the relationship between war and women's sexuality.
