CEK5122 Reading of Primary Philosophical Texts of the Middle Period Chinese Confucianism 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 Confucian Studies, Eastern Philosophy and Korean Philosophy - No
This course aims to not only read through but also philosophically analyze the essential texts of Neo-Confucianism. It starts from Han Yu(韓愈) in the late Tang Dynasty, followed by the philosophic writings and discussions of Zhou Dunyi(周敦頤), Zhang Zai(張載) and the Cheng Brothers (Cheng Hao 程顥 and Cheng Yi 程頤) in the Northern Song Dynasty, and then investigates in detail a diversity of writings of Zhu Xi(朱熹) in the Southern Song Dynasty. Hereafter, it explores the changes about basic propositions underlying Neo-Confucianism in Wang Yaming(王陽明)’s Learning of Heart-and-mind.

This course aims to investigate philosophical differences and similarities between pre-Qin thoughts including Confucianism, Mohism(墨家, Mojia), Daoism(道家, Daojia) and Legalism(法家, Fajia) by reading their original texts widely. Students thus would be able to learn the basic philosophical foundations of East Asian Philosophy. Through this, students are to research in priority the central and philosophical themes, which constituted Hundred Schools of Thought, such as the transition of the relationship between Heaven(天, Tien) and Human(人, Ren), differences in ethical point of views, and its corresponding changes in social ideologies, etc.

This course consists of two purposes. First, the course contains critical examination of important studies on Confucianism that have been conducted in East Asian languages. Second, it is to look into current research tendencies on Confucianism in East Asia. Thus, students would be able to make a road map for their dissertations.

Based on this, students are to make a foundation for writing academic articles at the international level.

This course is to deeply investigate the Daoist (道家, Daojia) philosophy through reading and analyzing the original texts of the Daodejing(道德經) and Zhuangzi(莊子) Simultaneously, by reviewing important studies on this subject, students can understand the Daoist philosophy and its history in depth and balance.

The main purpose of this course is to examine the basic concepts in Western aesthetics within the context of the history of Western aesthetics. The rang of the core concepts include mimesis, imagination, genius, sublimity, a theory of aesthetical attitude, a theory of taste. In addition, the range of Western aesthetical history in this study covers inclusively from Plato and Aristotle, passing through Baumgarten, Kant, Hegel, to contemporary Western aesthetical theories.

The purpose of this course is to comparatively examine the implications and differences inherent in thoughts on arts in Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism. Students thus would enhance their understanding of the ideological features that each of them has, and also compare and investigate the process which three thoughts above have permeated and assimilated with each other as well as historical and philosophical contexts that they have exerted over the thoughts on arts.

The aim of this study is to comparatively explore the essential concepts of East Asian and Western aesthetics, thus understanding the differences and similarities between them. The main focus of this study will be placed at investigating and comparing on what intellectual foundations they established the values of each genre of arts, such as poetry, prose, paintings, calligraphy, drama and so forth.

This course aims to read and analyze the original texts in classical Chinese on the theories of arts, particularly focusing on the field of premodern Chinese paintings. Through this, students specializing in East Asian theories on arts would be able to enhance their understanding on the original texts on East Asian arts and practice the skill for philosophical analysis of the given texts.
CEK5131 East Asian Theories on Painting 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 Confucian Studies, Eastern Philosophy and Korean Philosophy Korean Yes
The initial theoretical foundation of Chinese landscape painting was created on the basis of the philosophies of Six Dynasties and was followed by its establishment during the Tang Dynasty. In the Song Dynasty, the focus of the theories on landscape painting was removed to the area of literati painting(文人画 Wenrenhua). Hence, this course is designed to examine the formation and reformations of the theories on landscape painting synthetically, which occupies an independent field in the mainstream of East Asian thoughts on painting.
