Understanding culture and society in the 1980s is essential to understand the current cultural politics and ideology of Korea. This course deals with the literature and the culture of the 1980s. It was when democracy, the civil movement, and the labor literature, and public literary and artistic movement were active. Also at the same time, economic growth and popular culture flourished. In this course, we explore the cultural movement, the logic and the popular culture that were published in the 1980s, in addition to the various literary works.
DKL5115 A Study on Korean PeninsulaLiterature and Culture 3 6 Major Master/Doctor Korean Language and Literature - No
We will review the history of literature on the entire Korean peninsula based on the mutual understanding of South Korean literature and North Korean literature in this seminar. We also try to understand the literary phenomenon under the relationship between Korea and the neighboring countries of East Asia, focusing on North Korean literature and culture. We will study in depth the relationship between the division system or the peace regime and the Korean peninsula literature. We will focus on literature, but we will aim to open the horizon to the whole cultural phenomenon.

This course explores the theoretical foundations of public diplomacy specialized in East Asia through the education on the relationship between East Asian culture (including thoughts, philosophy, history, etc.) and public diplomacy, and the characteristics of public diplomacy in East Asian countries, and it also discusses the future direction of Korean public diplomacy through reviewing the cases of Korean public diplomacy, such as KF.

This class is aimed at examining the major discourses of East Asian studies and their outlook that have been discussed since the late 1990s, while discussing the historical background of the discourses. The discourses of East Asian studies are necessary to cover the overall discussions of East Asia made by the non-East Asian academic communities, and to examine comprehensively the East Asian community in consideration of the increasing political and economical significance of East Asia. Through the course, students will learn the history of the discourses of East Asian studies in the context of intellectual history of modern and contemporary East Asia.

The purpose of this class is to comprehensively examine the common characteristics and the differences among Korea, China and Japan. This course will take a critical view that the social changes of the three East Asian countries (Korea, China, and Japan) in pre-modern period had previously been viewed only from the perspective of the European shock. It instead inquires into the social changes in consideration of the pre-modern period.

This course aims to explore the Japanese colonization from the perspective of comparative history in order to clarify the characteristics of the governance. Students will be able to make researches into the aspects of colonization from various angles of politics, economy and thoughts.
EAS5032 Historical Materials for Pre-modern East Asia 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 - No
This class delves into both the common characteristics and the difference between the societies of pre-modern East Asian society and today's society. In order to effectively carry out the project, the course offers various materials on the history of human population produced by the three East Asian nations of Korea, China and Japan. Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) conducted a census of each province and made out family census registration. As part of its anti-Christianity policies, the central government of modern Japan ordered its people making entry into Buddhist temples to write down the papers on religions that guarantee they are not Christians, while mobilizing labor based on census registration. China also had its own family register system.

This course delves into the mutual interchanges between tradition and modernity. The process of modernization in East Asia differed according to the nations and at the same times shared some similarities. Both the common characteristics and the differences were basically derived from the traditional state and society structures. It, however, cannot be neglected that tradition was newly rediscovered in the process of modernization.

This class will inquire into the meaning of mutual homogeneity and heterogeneity of literature and cultures of East Asia in each period from the perspective of East Asian studies. By comparing the specific aspects of each nation's literature and cultures as well as their homogeneity and heterogeneity, the class examines the possibility of rediscovering the East Asian characteristics. This course also studies the cultural exchanges among the East Asian nations in the past in close consideration of their literature and culture.
